There are eight different Rift Mage Souls to choose from, so it is important to know what each of your souls does so you’re able to swap them in and out from time to time depending on your current situation. In this guide I will be explaining all of the rift mage souls for the class to help you create the best build for your playstyle. Please remember to take a loot at our recommended builds for your class under the Rift Builds Guide category.
Okay here are Rift Mage Souls
Elementalist
Of the eight Rift Mage Souls Elementalist is definitely one of the top contenders for the best main soul. You’re able to select from three different pets which all have a different use such as being a tank for leveling, or to help CC enemies in PvP. In addition to all of the pet options the Elementalist soul makes for a great damage soul on it’s own which is another plus.
Dominator
This is not a soul that you will probably want to be selecting as your main soul, but as far as an off-soul it is highly recommended you select it as your third soul in almost any situation. Selecting Dominator as your third soul allows you to use it’s 0pt abilities Neural Prod and Transmogrify. Neural Prod is a great instant cast damage spell which makes it great for kiting or when you’re chasing down an enemy who is low and need a quick cast to take them down. Transmogrify on the other hand is one of the absolute best CC abilities you can get which is why every Mage should use Dominator in at least a couple of their roles.
Warlock
The Warlock Soul for the Mage is mainly focusing on DoTs. Also if you choose Warlock as one of your Rift Mage Souls you’re given a lot of abilities that help heal you which gives this soul a lot of survivability. Pairing Warlock with something like Elemantalist or Necromancer is a great idea as you’ll have a pet to tank and do damage as well as having some self heals to keep yourself and your pet alive, possibly throwing in Chloromancer as well would make you very effective in solo PvE.
Archon
Archon really isn’t anything you will be wanting to use early on in Rift. This soul is used mainly for buffing friendly grouped players and yourself and placing debuffs on enemy targets. You could use this in one of your PvE grouping roles to help out group mates but it isn’t going to be a whole lot of fun. I can see this becoming a very interesting soul at level 50 in end-game raiding. There is the Flowing Sand ability which is great for getting out of sticky situations but you will need to put 6 points into the Soul tree before gaining access to this which you’ll have to decide if you want to lose that many points in your other Rift Mage Souls which could benefit you more.
Necromancer
Similar to the Elementalist soul, you’re given a pet with Necromancer. The Skeleton Stalwart is a great tanking pet which makes this a good soul to choose when leveling your mage in solo PvE. You’re also given access to a lot of damage over time abilities with the Necromancer soul as well as self healing abilities. This is always going to be a great choice when leveling your Mage by yourself and should be strongly considered when choosing your souls.
Stormcaller
Of all of the eight Rift Mage Souls this is the only 100% air and water magic damage soul, which doesn’t give this soul a whole lot of uniqueness. It’s somewhat similar to the Pyromancer soul which we’ll get into next, but currently is not quite as good. I personally wouldn’t really recommend this soul over the other ones available but it is fun to mess around with.
Pyromancer
As you may have guessed the Pyromancer soul is the fire soul of the eight rift mage souls. It focuses a lot on really high AoE damage as well as great single-target DPS. It isn’t really a leveling soul as you don’t have access to a pet or self healing with this but later on in raiding or instances it could be one of the top souls. Also grouping with people in PvP would allow for you to use Pyromancer to a very high efficiency.
Chloromancer
The final soul we’ll discuss is the Chloromancer Rift Mage Souls. This soul focuses on life damage and healing. You’re actually able to heal lower level instances with this soul which makes it a must have for at least one of your roles. It is also a great off-soul to have when leveling as it gives you some great self healing abilities, when paired with a pet soul like Necromancer or Elementalist, it gives you great soloing capabilities. A few points into the tree you’re able to get Bloom which can be spec’d to an instant cast which is a great low mana heal for yourself or party members.
